Frontier Planning to Extend 50 Mgps Speeds to Millions of Homes
Posted on Mon Aug-08-2016
Frontier aims to make up for setbacks from integrating the Verizon properties purchased in April by extending higher speeds to more of its customer base over the existing copper network. Investors were informed by CEO Dan McCarthy that Frontier plans on upgrading its copper plant to provide higher speeds to more homes capable of 50 Mbps or more. Both existing markets and those acquired from Verizon in areas lacking FiOS would be affected. Customers will be upgraded from 7 Mbps to 50 or 100 Mbps. Of course, the availability of these upgrades will depend on the condition of existing infrastructure and distances between residences and central offices or cabinets. In the meantime, Frontier’s broadband network upgrade program continues. According to a Seeking Alpha transcript, McCarthy said “This program will result in the expansion of 50 megabites or higher broadband capability to 2 million homes over the next year”. This extension of higher speed services outside the FiOS FTTH market will enable Frontier to compete more effectively with cable providers like Comcast and Charter Communications, which are already capable of delivering speeds of 100 Mbps or more. With integration of Verizon assets in CA, FL, and TX, Frontier is focusing energies on upgrading central offices and remote terminal cabinets with necessary equipment because using a mixture of technologies is the best way to offer accessibility of the upgraded speeds to first-time customers in non-FiOS areas.
