NY Attorney General Crowdsourcing Speed Tests in Attempt to Reveal Scam
Posted on Tue Dec-15-2015
Eric Schneiderman, Attorney General of New York, recently asked the public to test their internet speeds and submit their results online. The crowdsourcing is part of an investigation to determine if customers are being shortchanged with lower-than-advertised speeds. The providers currently under investigation are Verizon Communications Inc, Time Warner Cable Inc, and Cablevison Systems Corp. Although information has already been requested from the companies in question, Schneiderman wants real data from the public, saying in a statement “New Yorkers should get the Internet speeds they pay for. Too many of us may be paying for one thing, and getting another.” The investigation also involves inter-connection arrangements between networks for mutual data exchange. Although the companies have shown confidence in their internet speeds and agree to cooperate and assist the investigation by providing the requested information, Schneiderman’s office has been concerned that technical problems caused by business disputes over the interconnection agreements may be causing disruptions in service for high-speed customers.
